Background of the Study
Stigma surrounding mental illness remains a significant challenge worldwide, particularly in areas with limited awareness and mental health resources. In Borno State, where mental health care services are scarce, the stigma associated with mental illness often prevents patients from seeking treatment and hinders the recovery process. Family members, who are primary caregivers, often carry the weight of this stigma and may inadvertently contribute to it through negative attitudes or a lack of understanding of mental health conditions.
Nurse-led family counseling has been identified as an effective intervention for reducing stigma by providing families with education about mental illness, teaching coping strategies, and encouraging supportive behaviors. In Borno State, where cultural beliefs about mental illness are strong, it is essential to integrate culturally sensitive approaches into mental health care. This study aims to evaluate the effect of nurse-led family counseling on reducing stigma towards mentally ill patients, ultimately improving patient outcomes and fostering a more supportive environment for recovery.
Statement of the Problem
Stigma towards mental illness in Borno State creates barriers to effective treatment and recovery for patients. This stigma is often perpetuated by family members who may lack understanding and empathy due to cultural beliefs. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of nurse-led family counseling in reducing stigma and improving the quality of care for mentally ill patients in Borno State.
